Group accuses Ebonyi government of intimidating their members with thugs

A pro Biafra group under the aegis of Movement of Biafrans in Nigeria (MOBIN) has accused the Ebonyi state government of employing the services of thugs to allegedly harass and intimidate its members in the state. The group also alleged that the state government employed the thugs to disrupt its planned 50-year-Biafra memorial anniversary lecture that was meant to hold in the Women Development Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

It has earlier been reported that police in Ebonyi state arrested members of MASSOB and IPOB for unlawfully sensitising the public to stay at home on May 30 in celebration of its 50 year anniversary. Pro- Biafran groups accuse Ebonyi government of intimidating their members The police described the groups as illegal groups and did not get permission from the police to embark on such exercise which it said is threatening the peace and security in the state.

But in a statement signed by MOBIN Director General, Rita Eberechukwu Anigboguis, and made available to NAIJ.com, MOBIN said the group, contrary to the police statement, is a law-abiding organisation under the customary government and supreme council of elders of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB). It said IPOB is a registered organisation in Nigeria, and therefore, is a legal pro-Biafran movement under which MOBIN is pursuing its dreams of taking over Biafra land politically. The group alleged that Ebonyi state government allegedly sent thugs to drive away Biafrans who had gathered at the venue of the event and harassed them, including the MOBIN director of political education, Evangelist David Agbo, who is the prime organizer of the event.
